Description

Sorekara (それから, And Then) is a novel by Natsume Sōseki, published in 1909. It follows the life of Daisuke, a wealthy and intelligent but indecisive man in his early 30s, who has chosen a life of leisure rather than pursuing a career. Despite his privileged status, he struggles with feelings of dissatisfaction and alienation in a rapidly modernizing Japan.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Daisuke falls in love with Michiyo, the wife of his best friend, Hiraoka. This forbidden love forces him to confront his own passivity and the expectations of his family and society. As he wrestles with his emotions, he ultimately decides to reject traditional values in pursuit of personal happiness—at great personal cost.

The novel is a deep exploration of individualism, societal pressure, and the conflicts between modernity and tradition in early 20th-century Japan.
